SHIFTING FOOD SYSTEMS

In Asia and beyond, Lever Foundation partners with food companies to build sustainable, humane food systems.

Across Asia and beyond, Lever Foundation helps build sustainable, humane food systems

ASIA IS KEY

Asia feeds 60% of the world's population, raises 75% of its farm animals, and generates 60% of global food emissions. But the region, which has been transforming from scarcity toward abundance, now faces a new challenge: making that abundance sustainable.

Animal protein consumption in Asia is already double that of the U.S. and E.U. combined, and accounts for half of global growth in demand. Most animals are confined in industrial systems that intensify suffering and increase the risk of disease transmission. Diet-related illness climbs. Land and water strain under production pressure.

What unfolds in Asia's food systems over the next decade will shape the world we all inhabit. This is where change matters most—and where corporate decisions can redirect entire supply chains toward sustainability.

WHAT WE DO

Grocery stores in Jakarta and caterers in Bangkok adjust purchase orders to remove harmful practices from their supply chains. Plant-forward menus appear from Manila hotels to Shanghai hotpot restaurants. Farmers from Malaysia to Korea adopt improved methods and notice the benefits. This is what change looks like as Lever Foundation works to build sustainable, humane food systems across Asia and beyond.

PRODUCER PARTNERSHIPS

Some of the most durable change happens upstream. Through close engagement with farmers and trade groups, shifts away from the most harmful animal agriculture systems and aquaculture practices are taking hold across the region. These farmer upgrades mark a step forward from the past, designed to last.

CORPORATE ENGAGEMENT

Change truly accelerates when food buyers at major retail, food service, and hospitality chains move. Through direct engagement, Lever helps food companies across Asia set and implement time-bound commitments to improve their sourcing standards. As sustainable food policies stack up and scale, supply chains shift—and with them, impact across climate, animal welfare and public health.

PUBLIC EDUCATION

Public understanding and public opinion shape markets. Lever’s campaigns across mainstream media, trade publications and social media help shape the conversation on what sustainable, humane and healthy food looks like. As consumer desires and expectations shift, industry follows.
