Kasemchai Food Plans to Produce 100 Million Cage-Free Eggs a Year
In the low, open barns of Nakhon Pathom Province, about an hour outside Bangkok, hens move freely — perching, dust-bathing, nesting — on a farm that has been raising birds since 1976. What started as a small duck-egg operation has grown into one of Thailand's integrated farming brands. Now, Kasemchai Food Co., Ltd. (KCF) is scaling to meet what it calls the fastest-growing demand in its nearly five-decade history: cage-free eggs.
The company has announced a commitment to move hens out of cages at scale — reaching 300,000 cage-free eggs per day, roughly 100 million per year, by mid-2026.
From Duck Farm to Integrated Operation
Founded in 1976, KCF manages 120,000 laying hens in cage-free systems certified by Thailand's Department of Livestock Development. Its portfolio spans salted eggs, century eggs, egg tofu, and processed fish products. Current cage-free customers include Sodexo Services (Thailand), BNN Restaurant Group (Suki Teenoi), TCC Hotel Asset Management, Spry Asia Group, and Shangri-La Hotels.
A Cage-Free Commitment Built on Existing Infrastructure
Eight existing barns are already ready to support the scale-up, putting KCF on track to reach full capacity before mid-2026 — as soon as customer orders are confirmed.
"We are committed to accelerating our cage-free egg transition as part of our responsibility to animal welfare and our customers' evolving expectations," said Mr. Pornchai Inra, KCF representative. "The market is clearly moving toward higher welfare standards, and with our infrastructure ready, we can scale our cage-free operations to produce 300,000 eggs daily before mid-2026 to meet this growing demand, both domestically and internationally."
Cage-free systems allow hens to engage in natural behaviors — nesting, perching, dust-bathing — that are completely restricted in conventional battery-cage systems. Research consistently shows that eggs from hens raised outside cages carry improved food safety profiles and higher nutritional value.
The Market Has Already Moved
According to Lever Foundation's 2025 Thailand Hospitality Industry Cage-Free Egg Scorecard, 61% of major hotel groups in Thailand now have cage-free commitments, with several having already completed their transitions. Cage-free has moved from a niche concern to a mainstream expectation among institutional buyers.
"KCF's expansion reflects the growing market infrastructure supporting cage-free production in Thailand," said Purita Sayavaranont, Sustainability Program Lead at Lever Foundation. "When established producers scale their cage-free operations to meet demand from major hospitality and foodservice brands, it demonstrates that higher animal welfare standards are becoming commercially viable and increasingly expected by institutional buyers."
